Special Concert Gagaku
Gagaku is a type of Japanese classical court music that has beenperformed for over 1200 years. It is a fusion of native Shinto religious music, called utamai with influences from China and South Asia.
Gagaku has been carefully preserved and handed down to present day. The performance will include a contemporary interpretation underpinned by the original philosophical base and musical theory.
First of all, the performer will play the famous classical piece called "Hyojou Choushi" (). It means harmony in Japanese, and in Gagaku music we can envision a harmony between the atmosphere and the mind.
The second piece, Etenraku (), is also well-known and will involve improvisation by the performer.
If there is time remaining, the performer will play her own original musical piece called Ibuki (a breath) with a musical instrument called "U" () which is a restored Syosoin treasure.
Ms. Tamami Tono, our performer, she studied musical composition at Kunitachi College of Music and after that studied Gagaku under several famous Gagaku musicians.
From 1989, she has started to perform Sho (/one of Gagaku musical instruments) actively in Japan and overseas. She joined Silk Road Project which was supervised by Yo-Yo MA and also worked together with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yosuke Yamashita.
